The Key to Happiness by Jan Engels-Smith
“Uncontrollable mental chatter is the cause of ALL the suffering in your life. The moment you calm the thousands of thoughts that constantly occupy your mind, a powerful loving stillness rises to the surface. Hold that inner stillness, it is here to awaken you to new life. There is an enlightened center, a constant source of peace inside. Explore this essence & your everyday life experience will never touch suffering again.” ~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of NOW
The ability to stay focused and to hold attention is fundamental to any shamanic practice and obtaining a state of well-being. As crucial as it is, this ability generally remains a weakness in our culture and in our everyday lives. Most people find stilling the mind to be the most challenging and the most rewarding of all spiritual practices. A trained and focused mind brings peace and ultimately joy.
Eckhart Tolle says this powerfully:
“Uncontrollable MIND chatter IS the reason for ALL of the SUFFERING in your life. . . Many people live with a tormentor in their head that continuously attacks and punishes them and drains them of vital energy. It is the cause of untold misery and unhappiness, as well as of disease. The voice comments, speculates, judges, compares, complains, likes, dislikes, and so on. The voice isn’t necessarily relevant to the situation you find yourself in at the time, it may be reviving the recent or distant past or rehearsing or imagination possible future situations…”
Thinking has become a disease- and disease happens when things get out of balance… The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly, but when used wrongly, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly — you usually don’t use it at all. It uses YOU. This is the disease. You believe that you ARE your mind. This is the delusion. The instrument has taken you over.
No room exists for a solution when you are full of problems. So whenever you can, make some room, and create some space so that you can find the life underneath your life situation. Why are you always anxious? Jesus asked his disciples, “Can anxious thoughts add a single day to our life?”
So how can we be free of this affliction? Make it conscious. Observe the many ways in which unease, discontent, and tension arise within you through unnecessary judgment, resistance to what is, and denial of the NOW. Anything unconscious dissolves when you shine the light of consciousness on it. Once you know how to dissolve ordinary unconsciousness, the light of your presence will shine brightly, and it will be much easier to deal with deep unconsciousness whenever you feel its gravitational pull. . .” Where does this quote start? I just see an end quote.
Total wellness is being in control of your thoughts. This will then directly affect your feelings and your sense of well being. Meditation or stilling techniques are tools to help in this process. We come out of a culture that idealizes stimulation. Video games and advertisements that encourage less than a second of attention, don’t lend to controlled thoughts. I have been meditating since my 20’s and find it primary for my spiritual growth, peace of mind, awareness, and sense of joy. It allows the TRUE SELF to emerge and a new perspective to surface.
Do you have a process that spirit taught you? This would be a good place to give an overview of the process.
