Here is a simple process to change your life. Throughout the day have checkpoints about your thinking. Ask yourself the question. Does this thought make me feel good or does this thought make me feel bad? If it makes you feel bad quit thinking it; if it makes you feel good, have at it and enjoy your process.

Every one of us has opinions about many things. Opinions stimulate an internal emotional response and offer a vibrational frequency that resonates throughout the universe and every opinion is a point of attraction that attracts other like frequencies. Before offering an opinion or even pondering one, consider the quality of your view. Will this opinion help or hinder your overall well being?

There are two parts of you. Your egoic wounded self and your true self. Your true self knows no wound, only unconditional love. Each day ask yourself to embody more of your true self than your egoic wounded self.

Sometimes it is hard to discern whether you are thinking about that which you desire or thinking about what you don’t desire. We often think about why a problem is a problem instead of a solution to the problem. Focusing on just the problem can increase frustration, anger, or helplessness—all negative emotions that attract more negativity. On the other hand, considering a resolution to a problem generates feelings of hope, harmony, and peace—positive emotions that send out positive vibrations that promote greater concord and amity. Ask yourself what feelings you seek in the solution that you need and then try to find those feelings in other areas of your life. Where have you found your greatest harmony with the universe and when have you felt the most confident in your personal power? As soon as you start replicating the feelings you had in these circumstances then you will start attracting more of this positive energy, which usually opens the door to the solution that you seek.

To become aware of “your point of attraction” will have tremendous value in creating the type of life that you desire. Your point of attraction is determined by your feelings. Points of attraction can be created by either deliberate action or by subconscious thoughts. Deliberate means that you are consciously paying attention to your feelings and what you are attracting to yourself. Not being deliberately conscious of your feelings may result in your subconscious attracting feelings from a wounded past or other previous negative experience. This mental inaction might lead you to think that bad things just happen to you naturally and that you do not have a role to play in determining your situation. Instead, you must realize that you are a vibrational being that creates realities through the energies that you project from yourself and the corresponding dynamisms that you attract by these projections.

What you think and what you feel will determine what you attract in each moment. Too simple you say? Ask yourself, how happy can I be today? You might be surprised how one happy or pleasant thought can course through your body and multiply the positive energies of contentment, joy, or even ecstasy.

Try this exercise. Before you drink a glass of water, hold the glass between your hands and think of positive words you would like to imbue into the water. The water absorbs these energies. When you drink the newly imbued water you are letting that positive energy flow throughout your body, into every cell, and into your mind. Your body is about 65-85% water and the molecules of the water that you have imbued with positive energies will permeate all the cells of your body and alter your state of being.

When you wake in the morning—before anything else—set a quick intention. Mine is: I love my life. This sets the tone for the entire day.

Daydreaming is a wonderful tool of creation. Pause throughout the day and daydream about what you enjoy. Not what you want, but what you enjoy. This wonderful activity has tremendous value in your well being.

Quantum physics tells us that when you observe an experiment you change the outcome of the experiment because you have observed it. If a scientist has an opinion about what he or she is observing, the results can be affected by the attitude of the observer. This breakthrough in science represents what metaphysics has been declaring for decades. If you observe your thoughts (which is the same as observing an experiment) you can automatically change the outcome of events in a very deliberate way.

We can be very influenced by the media or the collective mass consciousness. However you always have ultimate control. It is your birthright. If you don’t like what the media or the mass consciousness dictates, don’t accept it, and create your own reality through deliberate choice. This is not done by focusing on the negative quality of the existing reality but by creating positive thoughts about around the possible good outcomes that can replace the negativity of inevitable catastrophe and hopelessness. We all saw in the recent terrorist attacks in Paris a startling difference in the pain of the immediate tragedy and the subsequent outpouring of love and hope that emanated from the masses that gathered to celebrate life, not death. People were drawn together by a positive energy to affirm what is good in our relationships, not in the isolation of despair.

You get to choose what you want for yourself today—what thoughts you want to think and what feelings you want to feel.

If there is a person in your life who pushes your buttons, spend some time today sending him or her your love and blessings. Don’t try to justify why they don’t deserve your love or blessings; that just adds to the problem. Just express your best self.   You will feel an immediate relief.

Do you BELIEVE that you can have your heart’s desire or whatever is on your manifestation list? If you do not, then the “do not” energy is your primary broadcast. It will cancel out any prayer, wish, or pleading that you project. It is easy to change a “do not” vibration by moving into appreciation. Appreciate what you “DO” have and what has already manifested in your life. This will get your energy broadcast in a good place.

There is a paradox that I try to remember whenever I struggle with a situation. When I surrender and let go of the control that I try to exercise over the situation, I allow the magnificence that surrounds me the opportunity to infiltrate my awareness. It is easy to feel good when things are comfortable and going well. However, it is in life’s struggles that we find the greatest opportunities for growth and evolution of our consciousness. Notice where you struggle and what opportunities the struggles present.

The most powerful part of the human body is the heart. Not the mind, but the heart. Open your heart and notice how it feels.

Do you ever have knee jerk responses to situations or people? Knee jerk responses are because you are in a habit of thinking, feeling and responding a particular way. You can prevent conditioned negative responses through the practice of deliberate feel good exercise. The more you practice feeling good, the more the feel-good response will imbue your being. In time, your automatic reaction to anything will be positive, uplifting and loving. I have developed a discipline that I call the feel good challenge. It is something that I practice daily and you can find the entire process on my web site. Here is a sampling of a few of the challenges:

  1. Complaining is an energy that causes more problems. Some people are unaware of how much they complain. Some people think that the complaining will actually change a situation. Complaining is a low frequency energy that will actually cause your body to ache, your pocketbook to drain, and your relationships to be strained. Instead relook at any situation that you feel upset about and try to reframe it. If that seems too hard to do, decide to focus on a few aspects of your life where you can feel appreciation.

Here are mine: Potential, Choice, Inspired, Motivated, Bright

  1. A major part of life is managing relationships. Even if you are not partnered you are in relationships. You are in relationship to others, relationship to the earth, relationship to your body, and relationship to the divine. How you manage these relationships will indicate where you are in balance or not in balance. To ascend into higher dimensions of thought and well being all these relationships need to be healthy. They become healthy through positive attitude and feelings.

What are 5 feeling words you can bring to your relationships today?

Here are mine: Appreciation, Awestruck, Thankfulness, Forgiveness, Humility

  1. Be curious and expect miracles. Curiosity allows the mind to have a certain amount of freedom. This raises your vibration. Curiosity is a good thing. Anything that raises your vibration is a good thing. Be curious, expect the best, and enjoy.

What are 5 FEELINGS you choose to feel today that will invoke curiosity in your life?

Here are mine: Wonderment, Openness, Expansion, Newness, Inventiveness

  1. Through the Laws of Creation you have created yourself. Your core is divine and magnificent. If you have created a lesser version of that to show to the world then you can recreate that version to match your core. The choice is always yours. You create with words, thoughts and feelings. Celebrate yourself!

Shamanic journeying is available to anyone willing to learn. The altered state of consciousness achieved in a journey allows you to transcend the limitations of the rational world, with which we are so familiar, and enter the realm of the non-ordinary. Following are the basic aspects of the shamanic journey that I will describe in this article:

  1. The journey and the state of altered consciousness that is induced are created by a sonic instrument such as a drum or rattle.
  2. Prior to the journey, you are asked to form an intention for the journey defining what you hope to gain from the experience.
  3. During the journey, the practicing shaman meets up with his or her Power Animals or Spiritual Allies to gain information pertaining to the declared intention.
  4. Journeys take place in three different realms: the Lower, Upper, and Middle Worlds. The three worlds hold different kinds of information and the shaman learns how to travel in these different realities. This article will highlight the Lower World.
  5. Journeying is a right brain function.

Why Do We Journey?

The Shamanic Journey


Journeys are real. The worlds where these journeys take you do exist, which the right brain can perceive. The other dimensions, seeing or experiencing spirits, the feelings of oneness and non-separation, are all experiences of the right brain.  The right brain is free of ego and full of possibilities; it is unrestricted.

There is a profound magic to journeys that is literally unexplainable using traditional human thought systems and language common to the left brain. We are a left brain dominate culture and it is our left brain that tries to concretize things, leading us to believe that there are highly restrictive boundaries on truth and that there are severe limitations on our ability to change circumstances. Left brain thinking is controlled by the ego which perceives the world and your life from the past and future.

The more you journey and break out of the barriers of the left brain and realize the reality of these places and the energy contained in them, the more powerful you become and the more instantly things manifest in your own life. Limitations fall away.

The journey is used to provide access to information from the spiritual realm which is as unlimited as the universe and the imagination. Anything is possible and information is readily available. Although there are other ways to gather information from the spirits, the journey is the method I prefer and that I teach my students at LightSong School of 21stCentury Shamanism and Energy Medicine. My goal is to empower my students to connect with their own spirit helpers. There is a vast amount of resources and comfort available to those willing to break out of the confinements of western thought and explore the truths held by the unseen. Who knows better than one’s own spiritual teachers and one’s own soul what is needed to heal and to grow? When we are learning the basics of the shamanic journey, we will make sure that all of our journeys to the spirits will be in places where there are only helping spirits. The Lower World is a place of enlightenment and the place where your Power Animal usually presides.

How Do We Learn?

The journey style takes our usual active mind and puts it to good use by teaching the mind how to rise out of the density of the Earth and all of its hardships and restrictions (left brain constructs) into other dimensions and realities (right brain). A person can quickly learn how to journey, and this is appealing to most people. The shamanic journey opens the door to non-ordinary reality, allows you to enter, and offers a technique to explore this vast, creative, and healing space.

In learning how to journey you will become increasingly aware of the spiritual realm of other realities and dimensions. You will discover just how disconnected most human beings are to the energy and spirituality around them.

Reality is an illusive thing. People are most dependent on their eyes to gain information, but our human vision is remarkably limited. Even 20/20 vision in humans is paltry compared to that of many in the animal kingdom. Because of our obsession with sight, we have negated the existence of the unseen, limited the use of our other senses, and diminished their potential usefulness and effectiveness.

We, as a culture, have overdeveloped the left side of our brains at the expense of the right side. Our schools, bureaucratic institutions, sciences, and our very culture have emphasized analytical understanding while minimizing the value of creativity. We have become what the spirits fondly refer to as lopsided. I often say to students that some spiritual things simply can’t be explained in words; to define these experiences in rational terms is to dilute the experience. Trying to explain a right-brain, non-linear experience using left-brain linear, analytical, sequential, and rational terms does not work. Spirit is the world of the nonlinear; it uses the senses of the soul, which are governed by the heart. It is often said that the shaman “sees,” “hears,” “feels,” and “knows” with her/his heart. Journeying develops these “senses of the soul” while it stimulates and utilizes the right side of the brain.

As in anything, the more you practice journeying the better you will get at discovering new realities. New worlds open up that are blindly missed by the human eye and the rational left brain. I am amazed at what is available to all individuals when they let go of existing paradigms and limited perspectives.

Opening the mind and allowing spirit to work unencumbered is what we often call a miracle or magic. It is what spirit calls Eagle Vision, the ability to rise above the limited view of immediate circumstance to gain a broader, more inclusive perspective. There is so much more to “see” in the universal picture when one uses the senses of the soul and lives by the heart.

I have taught hundreds of people how to journey, most with remarkable success. The journey method empowers and enriches their lives. They develop a modality through journeying that is useful to everyday life. They can reach and communicate with their spirit helpers in a constructive and accurate way.

Place of Entry: For your journey to the Lower World, you will enter somewhere that feels as if it is “going down into the earth.” Choose a place that solicits the feeling of descending, like an animal hole or a crack in the earth. Some people use an image of a waterfall or imagine diving into a deep pool. Others climb down the roots of a tree.

Shamanically, a portal is an entryway into a different dimension; the place you choose represents your portal into the Lower World, which leads to your Ally. Once you establish this place, it becomes your place of entry. If it turns out you do not like your initial portal, you can choose something else.

In my tenure as a teacher, as well as participating in numerous journey workshops, I have witnessed hundreds of people learning to journey. A common complaint was that individuals felt lost in the portal, uncertain of their arrival in the Lower World. Commonly, they would question, “Am I in the Lower World? Am I not in the Lower World?” Not every one knew for sure. Participants might spend an entire 20 minutes attempting and reattempting to transcend from one world to the other. To have a different outcome I suggest that you count from 10 down to 1. When you reach number 1 you declare yourself in the Lower World. Intention makes it true; you are there.

The following is a brief summary of the journey process:

  • The first journey is to the Lower World to meet your Power Animal. The objective is to dialogue and to communicate in a multisensory mode with this ally.
  • If you have multiple animals appear, notice which one shows itself three to four times.
  • I recommend that you ask, “Are you my Power Animal?” and begin communicating with this question.
  • It is good protocol to offer the ally some food. Food tends to be a universal sign of friendship, which includes our non-ordinary friends.
  • Be multisensory, consciously engaging your senses – seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, feeling, knowing; activate them all.
  • Journeying is an internal process; the Power Animal will speak with you telepathically. Tell your ally that you desire to be in relationship; you are excited and thrilled for this opportunity. Start building this relationship.
  • Do not be concerned if you are still cognizant of your body or hear sounds happening in the room while you are in the journey. You are omnipresent. You can be many places at once. You can see and feel yourself in the journey, while still being conscious of your bodily presence in the room. You have the ability to invoke many perceptions at one time.
  • Before you journey, fill with power. Call in the spirits. The process can be simple to start: acknowledge the directions, drum, and say an invocation.
  • Your opening ritual will continue to develop, but get in the habit of setting the stage before every journey. Develop a way that is most comfortable for you and allows you to focus your attention most effectively
  • In your journey be very clear about your intention, what you are asking of the spirits. The clarity of your intention will influence your entire journey and how clear the response from the spirits will be.
  • Take some nice deep breaths and relax, knowing that this is a glorious moment for you and for your Power Animal, and you are greatly loved in the universe.
  • Repeat your intention: “I am going to the Lower World to meet my Power Animal.”
  • Place a mind fold or eye cover over your eyes.
  • Start drumming or turn on your drumming CD.
  • Move through your portal, counting down from 10 to 1, when you will find yourself in the Lower World.
  • Ask any animals you encounter whether they are your Power Animal. If not, ask again for your power animal to come forth.
  • Once you have determined your power animal, try to engage all your senses: feel, listen, smell, taste and visualize. Use knowingness, especially if you experience a black screen.
  • If time permits, ask them what attributes they bring for you.
  • When you hear the drum cadence change (callback), thank your Power Animal, retrace your journey (this locks the journey into your memory), and return through your portal.
  • Journal your experience.

Tips for Improving Your Journey:

–Keep track of information in your journal, no matter how insignificant it might seem.

–Never is nothing happening.

–Let information percolate.

–Journey again and ask for more information.

As I observe clients moving through the personal journey from head to heart, two main themes emerge again and again—the need for self-awareness and for redefining self. The first is a need for awareness of their own intrinsic worth. Spirit is continually providing evidence that God not only loves, but also values each being beyond all imagination. In the process of becoming yourself you become open to this reality. The second need is for redefining self in terms of this unconditional love. It is often difficult for the mind to grasp the meaning of a love with no conditions, but the heart is capable. Unconditional love is not based on what you do, how hard you try, whether you are successful, or even if you are a “good” person. There is nothing that you could do to not be loved. In the journey from the head to the heart, one comes to understand this type of love and apply it to self. When you truly understand the unconditional love from God, you move closer to being able to love yourself unconditionally. Your complete self-acceptance replaces prior doubts, disappointments, and regrets. All of life’s “should have,” “would have,” and “could have” feelings dissipate in a newfound awareness of one’s own immense worth in the eyes of God.

Through my own experiences, my own journey from head to heart, I have found that healing and the restoration of one’s wholeness can be complete. Answers to the questions of life’s mysteries—what is life all about, why do people become so wounded, how do people heal, why does it take so long for some to heal, why aren’t people happy, and why do so many people stay entrenched in the past instead of alive in the present moment—all can be answered.  The beauty of the answers is that they bring wholeness, understanding, happiness and new beginnings for the people who employ them.

What I have learned on this divine path is that life is to be enjoyed and being whole feels wonderful!

Our perfect selves exist within us and our quest is to recognize, affirm, and bring it to full realization. We desire to find fulfillment in a unity with the wholeness of the universe and to achieve the completion of our destiny. We strive for the alignment that will empower us to be that which we were meant to be.  However, in even our most committed states and with our energies focused and our minds set, we may fall short of the fulfillment of our spiritual completeness and struggle to continue the effort of personal enlightenment. The universe is a place of opportunity and wonder; it does not create barriers to self-actualization but is a place where the prospects of spiritual fulfillment are real and waiting for us to show up. The universe does all that it can do to help us become aware, comprehend, and accept the ideal state that is our true self.  Where do the hindrances to our success originate? What are the deterrents to our unity with the universal oneness that is the natural state of existence? How can we deal with impediments to our spiritual awakening?

We cannot look outside of ourselves for the causes of our struggles.

Although we possess within ourselves the unlimited power to become that which we desire and the spiritual world is an ally in our evolution to finding our true meaning in life, there exists within all of us a life history that has encountered pain, regret, and disappointment and in these experiences we had constructed false images of reality that caused us to imagine impossible obstacles and hopelessness.  Even as we move forward in our spiritual practices, the residues of these past incidents have left negative impressions and they continue to influence our current efforts.  These residual energies manifest in us as resistances (our own, not the universe’s) and our awareness and understanding of them will allow us to address their impact and, ultimately, to overcome their influence on our spiritual quest.

Jim was struggling with a career decision. He was about eighteen years old when John Lennon died and he felt Lennon’s spirit enter his body. This powerful experience changed the course of Jim’s life. He committed himself to John’s spirit and became obsessed with learning all of his music. Jim was a talented musician and developed a very successful band, which played Beatle standards. This supported Jim both financially and soulfully, but after many years, Jim felt as if he were becoming lost as an individual. He wanted to develop his own style of music and be recognized for himself. Jim was ready to hang up his Sergeant Pepper’s suit, but he had much indecision and remorse about this career change. He felt as though he were breaking his commitment to keep John and his music alive. He asked me to journey to John’s spirit.

My spirit helpers almost always show me things metaphorically during a journey, somewhat like a dream. Luckily for me my spirit helpers also usually explain the metaphors to me, unlike a dream where I must figure out the symbology for myself. The first scene that came to me in the journey was Jim lying on the floor sobbing into his hands. John walked over and pulled Jim to his knees and embraced him tightly. Jim continued to sob on John’s shoulder with John supporting and consoling him.

The scene then changed to Jim and John flying through the air with their bodies actually blended as if they were superimposed on each other. Each of them had one arm and one leg free and off to the side, but their inside arms and legs were superimposed. John was about a head’s length in front of Jim.

After several moments of this, the scene changed to Jim and John curling up into a ball or sphere that appeared like rolling light. I then saw Earth off in the distance as if I were viewing the planet from a space capsule.

I asked for an explanation of the metaphors. The first scene where John was consoling Jim had a real twist in it for my client. Jim had been a drug addict and his involvement with John’s music actually was part of his own healing. The Beatle band had kept Jim productive, responsible, and clean. In order to be a success, he had to take care of himself. John was actually keeping Jim alive, not the other way around.

The second scene with them flying through the air superimposed was explained as Jim and John actually being the same soul expressed in two different incarnations at the same time! Absolutely amazing! The reason that John’s head was shown a head’s length in front of Jim was that he was about twenty years older than Jim and further along in the expression of his life. I marveled at the meaning contained in such a simple image. I found it incredible. The spirits then went on to explain the imagery of the spherical ball of light that Jim and John had become. They stressed again through this imagery that time is not linear Time is holographic and there really is no such thing as past or future lives. Everything is happening simultaneously in different dimensions of time. Earth was used to illustrate that we can look at all individuals and see different incarnations of our soul being lived out. We have got a whole planet of people who are different expressions of us.

John Lennon’s words from “I Am the Walrus” are interestingly appropriate to Jim’s experience, like a message to him across time: “I am he, and he is me, and we are all together.”

Is this what the great masters and teachers such as Jesus, Buddha, and Muhammad have been implying for centuries? If so, I was beginning to understand it.

The spirits have expanded their teaching about incarnations since this journey. They fondly expressed to me that when we have real attachments to things, such as to a particular writer, poet, artist, or sculptor, and are drawn to his or her work, it is probably because we were actually the creator of that piece of work. If we read something from history that profoundly teaches us, we may have been part of the actual event. Even if we are extremely attached or moved to help someone, perhaps to support a child in a Third World country, then we are probably that child in a different lifetime expression. Do unto others as you would do unto yourself; the other might actually be you! Now there’s a thought.

I am still processing this information and probably will be for several years to come. It is amazing. The spirits have since taught me to journey to my other lifetimes and to remember the wisdom I gained from each lifetime expression. I have also learned to journey to souls I would like to learn more about. The possibilities available through journeying are unlimited. Journeys to other lifetimes can be extremely informative, but also lots of fun. I highly recommend them for anyone practicing their journey skills.
